THE SURGEON - Dr Eugene Buffa BVSC MMedVet (Surgery) N7231
Eugene is an Australian Registered Specialist Small Animal Surgeon. He recently moved from the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) in Sydney where he practiced as a Specialist Surgeon for 3 years. Prior to that he was head of Small Animal Clinical Services at the University of Sydney’s Veterinary Faculty in Camden, NSW. Eugene owned and ran a large specialist referral centre in South Africa for 15 years before immigrating to Australia in 2006.

Eugene qualified as a vet from the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 1985. He spent 5 years in general practice in England and South Africa before returning to the University of Pretoria where he completed a surgical residency and qualified as a specialist surgeon in 1995. He has published internationally and has presented at numerous congresses. He researched wound healing as part of a Masters degree and was a pioneer of canine hip replacement surgery in Africa. He is one of the original patented TPLO surgeons and was involved with VetMed, a satellite TV channel providing continuing education to vets throughout Africa. Eugene is an experienced and passionate surgeon who is committed to providing your pet with the best possible care.
 
SURGICAL PROCEDURES
A wide variety of both orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries can be performed. Your regular veterinarian in consultation with Dr Buffa will suggest the best treatment plan for your pet. Some surgical procedures are best performed at a dedicated specialist centres and we will advise you if this is necessary.
 
Specialist Consultations
A specialist consultation with Dr Buffa is offered for your pet at your regular veterinary clinic. This is always a good idea as many of the surgical conditions are complex and require a detailed explanation of the treatment required.

Advantages of a Specialist Consultation:

  • To confirm the diagnosis and that the treatment recommended is the best one for your pet.
  • Assess if there are any other factors that may affect the outcome of the surgery.
  • Have a detailed discussion with the surgeon regarding the procedure.
  • Address any concerns or questions about the procedure and aftercare.
In the consultation Dr Buffa will examine your pet and assess the diagnosis. Once the condition has been confirmed, he will discuss the nature of the surgery and the expected outcome. Unfortunately complications can occur with any surgical procedure and the more commonly reported problems associated with the surgery will be discussed. Sometimes we will advice you whether further test are recommended before a definitive treatment course can be undertaken.
 
Phone Consultations
We appreciate the importance of effective time management and convenience in many people’s lives. A phone consultation at a mutually convenient time can be scheduled to discuss a surgical procedure with Dr Buffa prior to proceeding.
